Do I Need a Plumber for a New Dishwasher Installation?

New Canadian Drain is a Toronto-based plumbing company with licensed professionals specializing in a wide range of plumbing services. Call us today for professional dishwasher installation assistance!

Dishwashers are generally considered plug and play appliances. The basic installation includes hooking up the water supply and waste lines to the available plumbing and then plugging it in. It can be that simple if your home and plumbing fixtures are new.

However, there is a potential hitch that is quite common. If the valves, hoses or pipes are old, they are often rusted or stuck in position and need to be replaced prior to the installation. The drainage can also present problems if not checked and can result in back-ups and leaks at a later time.

Although many appliance stores provide installation with delivery for a small fee, rarely do those installers provide plumbing services. If the issues are not caught in advance, the installation cannot proceed. A plumber would need to be called to fix any issues before the installers would return. Unless considered an emergency, plumbers are pre-booked on less urgent jobs so it could be days before the job is complete.

Remember a poor installation can lead to leaks, water damage, and wasted water.

Dishwasher Installation Options

Option #1

Set up a consultation with a plumber who will take a look at the situation in person and work up an estimate if pre-installation work is possibly needed. Although it may not be possible to anticipate problems, the plumber can provide an itemized estimate that details each possibility.

Questions a Plumber Might Ask

  1. How old is your home?
  2. Are you the original owner? If so, have any pipes been replaced in the kitchen?
  3. Is this a new appliance or a replacement?
  4. Make and model of the dishwasher
  5. Can the installation be scheduled or is it an emergency?
  6. Will the old dishwasher be removed prior to the installation?

The answers may help the plumber to determine whether a pre-installation house call is needed.

Option #2

Hire a plumber to do the entire job – plumbing requirements and dishwasher installation. It may cost a bit more than having the appliance store dispatch an installer, but you will have the assurance to know the dishwasher will be installed correctly. The appliance store can deliver the new appliance and the plumber can come to your location to take care of the rest.

Option #3

Consult with a plumber to discuss the situation and if no problems seem evident, you can install the appliance yourself. If you elect to take this route, be prepared and keep a plumber’s number handy.

Installing a dishwasher yourself isn’t always difficult and if all of the plumbing fixtures, hoses, water supply, and drainage are all intact, simply follow these steps:

  1. Attach one side of the drain line to your dishwasher
  2. Attach the other end into the hole under the sink
  3. Slide the dishwasher into place
  4. Make sure power is off
  5. Attach matching coloured wires.
  6. Attach the supply line with the parts in the connector kit (comes with the machine)
  7. Turn the power back on. Turn water on.
  8. Your dishwasher is installed. Now give it a test run while it is empty.
