How Do You Know It’s Blocked?

It can actually be a bit tricky to tell if the drain is blocked. That’s because so many drain problems can present as water not draining right. Cracked or broken pipes, waste buildup, backups, and blocks can all look the same to the untrained eye. That’s why it’s important to have a professional assess the problem before any work is done to fix it.

Why Blocks Should be Fixed Quickly

Blocked drains can really interfere with your life. If your kitchen sink is blocked, how will you wash dishes? If your shower isn’t draining properly, it can make showering a huge hassle. Not to mention, a shower that isn’t draining will allow bacteria from the pipes to come up and settle where you’re standing. That’s a health hazard to anyone using that shower. Don’t let a drain blockage put your life on hold. Let’s see how to solve the problem.

How is the Drain Checked?

There are a number of ways to assess what’s causing your drain’s problems. One of our favorite methods – and one of the most efficient – is using a camera. Camera inspection is done by inserting a flexible tube into the drain. This tube has a small camera on the end and broadcasts footage to a screen. This allows us to see exactly what’s going on in the pipes. Depending on what the issue is, this will give us an idea of how to proceed.

Fixing a Block

If an inspection shows that it is, indeed, a block in the pipes, it’s time to remove it. One of the best ways to remove a block is by snaking. A snake is a long, metal coil that gets inserted into the pipes. The rotating coil will grab onto anything blocking the pipes. When the coil is pulled straight out, it takes these blockages with it, removing them.

This is ideal for smaller blockages near the surface. If the blockage is deeper in the pipes than a snake can reach, a drum auger might be needed. A drum auger is like a larger, automatic snake. It can reach further into pipes and get through things that a hand-powered snake couldn’t.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is that you shouldn’t use chemical drain cleaners. These can eat through your pipes and cause bursts, cracks, and floods.
