How Can I Save on Water Usage?
According to a recent study done by Statistics Canada, “Canada’s average annual water yield – an estimate of the country’s supply of renewable fresh water – is so large that there is enough water to approximate a one-minute flow over Niagara Falls for each and every Canadian.”
Canadians rank second behind the U.S. in household water consumption. Although Canada is lucky enough to have a myriad of freshwater sources, there is still a concern about the need to conserve fresh water. Even though only nine percent of water usage is attributable to households, the water used for the production of goods and services that are used accounts for approximately 53 percent (2013 Statistics).
Water conservation is something that concerns all residents and stems from the changes in rainfall and temperature that are due to environmental climate change. Although Canada has 20 percent of the world’s freshwater supply, it only has 6.5 percent of the world’s renewable fresh water. The majority of it is up north away from the largest cities. That reinforces the point that it’s a good time to review and assess water usage habits. We’ve compiled eight of the easiest methods you can use that won’t require significant changes.
8 Ways to Conserve Water
1. Shut the water off while brushing
Did you know that two gallons of water are wasted for every minute the water runs while each family member brushes? So if the water is running for four minutes, that’s eight gallons of wasted water every morning and night and that is for one person. It’s an easy fix and once in the habit, you won’t even notice the difference.
2. Dishwashers save water
So many people are under the impression that washing dishes by hand saves water. But the difference is enormous. Washing dishes in the sink uses about 27 gallons of water versus the three gallons used with an ENERGY-STAR rated appliance. Rather than rinsing each dish before loading, scrape off the loose food and save even more water.
3. Professional car wash
Have you ever considered how much water is wasted while washing your car with a bucket and a hose? According to Resources, having your car professionally washed can save up to 100 gallons.
4. Plant a different garden
Gardens, lawns, and plants not indigenous to the area require more water than native plants or succulents. Native plants are more robust than those not accustomed to the natural ebbs and flows of the regional weather patterns. Succulents are excellent for ground cover, thus avoiding the upkeep of large water-thirsty lawns. Plus, they contain water and rarely have to be infused with additional water. Considering catching the rain in containers that can be used to water the property is another useful idea.
5. Low Flow or Dual Flush toilets
Older toilets use approximately 3.5 gallons per flush and are not water efficient. Replacing old toilets with new will save more than 50% of the water currently being used. Water and money will be saved at a rate of 1.6 gallons per flush.
6. Keep your pool covered
Water evaporation means water will need to be pumped into the pool frequently. It’s best to cover your outdoor pool at all times of the year. If you own a large pool, consider adding an automatic roller cover to ensure it can be covered easily.
7. Look for and repair leaks
Did you know that the tiniest leaks could waste 100 gallons of water daily? Dripping faucets, showerheads, hoses, and sprinklers are the most common fixtures for leaks, look for and repair leaks. Oftentimes, the fix is nothing more than replacing an old, worn-out washer.
8. Replace old appliances with high-efficiency models
Some utility companies offer rebates or promotions intended to incentivize customers to change over to appliances that use less water and energy. Even if a money-saving offer is not available, using ENERGY STAR appliances is going to save tons of water and money in the long run.
