Common Basement Waterproofing Terms

  • Sump Pump. A sump pump is an electric powered device that can pump water directly from your basement to outside your home. It can be operated manually or automatically.
  • Cinder block. This is pre-formed construction material often used to build the foundation of a home or other structure; it is normally made from cement and comes in individual blocks. Cracks can occur between the blocks, allowing water to seep into your basement.
  • Downspout. This is vertical pipe made from metal or other material that is used to drain water from your roof and away from your house. Damaged downspouts often lead to leaky basements and the need for waterproofing services.
  • Interior drain system. This refers to a type of drain system that is installed inside your basement, either around the entire perimeter, or at a specific point where water is leaking into the area. In many cases, part of the floor will be broken and removed, and perforated drain pipes will be installed and covered with pea gravel to help capture water and direct it to a drain. This is sometimes referred to as a “French Drain.”
  • Hairline crack. These are extremely tiny cracks barely visible that can appear in basement walls or floors and can lead to water gradually seeping into your basement over time.
  • Waterproofing membrane. This refers to a kind of material, impermeable and made from plastic or rubber, that is installed around the outside foundation walls. It helps repel moisture and water, but is not guaranteed to prevent a leaky basement.
  • Polyurethane. This is a compound that can be injected into cracks or holes in the basement walls or floors and is a common method for stopping water leaks.
  • Hydraulic cement. Hydraulic cement is a kind of cement that can be applied to cracks or holes when water is present, and will expand as it dries. The compound also gets harder over time.
  • Poured concrete. This is another way in which basement foundation walls are built. But instead of individual bricks, liquid concrete is poured into pre-shaped forms to create the walls, similar to how a sidewalk or driveway is poured.
